Hello everyone, welcome to ‘Just a Moment News.’ I’m Erika, and today, June 28th, 2024, we’re diving into some of the latest happenings around the globe.
First up, President Biden’s recent debate performance has stirred quite a bit of conversation. In an early face-off against former President Trump, aiming to kickstart his re-election campaign, Biden’s performance unfortunately didn’t hit the mark he perhaps intended. His responses were described as disjointed and halting, which has caused a bit of a stir among Democrats. Concerns about whether at eighty-one, Biden is the best candidate to continue the campaign have been voiced, with some prominent Democrats and donors expressing their shock and reconsideration of his candidacy. On the other hand, Trump appeared more confident and energetic, which didn’t help Biden’s cause. With no other debates scheduled until September, the Biden campaign is now in a phase of regrouping and addressing these concerns.
Moving on, let’s talk about a major financial scandal. Over at Absa, an IT specialist named Xolela Masebeni allegedly orchestrated a heist that led to nearly one hundred and three million Rand being stolen. More than fifty-nine million Rand of this was transferred to the account of his best friend, Gershom Matomane. This money was reportedly spent on lavish lifestyles, including luxury cars and expensive hotels. The situation escalated when Masebeni, after being confronted and wiping his work laptop clean, was shot dead a month after being granted bail. The case, involving charges of theft, fraud, and money laundering, is set to move to the Gauteng High Court for trial this coming September.
Switching gears to sports, India has secured a spot in the T20 World Cup final after a decisive victory against England. Captain Rohit Sharma and spinner Axar Patel were standout performers, leading India to a 68-run win. Despite some rain delays, the match was completed, setting the stage for India to face South Africa in the final this Saturday in Bridgetown, Barbados.
In tech news, Instagram is testing a new feature called “AI Studio,” where creators can develop AI chatbot versions of themselves. Announced by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, this feature is currently in a trial phase in the US. These AI chatbots will operate in messaging, clearly labeled as AI, with warnings about potential inaccuracies. Zuckerberg’s vision is to enable creators and small businesses to use these AI tools for engaging with their communities more dynamically.
Lastly, OpenAI has introduced a new AI model named CriticGPT, which outperforms humans in identifying errors in AI-generated code. This model, based on GPT-4, is trained to spot and critique coding errors, enhancing the accuracy of human code reviews. Despite its capabilities, CriticGPT does have limitations, particularly in handling more complex tasks and identifying errors spread across multiple parts of an answer.
